Job description

Responsibilities:

  1. Interpret and interpret architectural plans, blueprints, and specifications to determine project requirements and layout dimensions for masonry work.
  2. Select and prepare materials, including bricks, blocks, stones, mortar, and grout, ensuring proper quality, quantity, and compatibility with project specifications.
  3. Construct and repair walls, foundations, chimneys, and other structures using traditional masonry techniques, such as bricklaying, block laying, and stone masonry.
  4. Lay bricks, blocks, or stones in courses, aligning them with plumb lines and level surfaces to create straight, even walls and surfaces.
  5. Cut, shape, and trim bricks, blocks, or stones using hand tools or power tools, such as saws, chisels, and hammers, to fit around corners, openings, or irregularities.
  6. Mix and apply mortar or grout to bond masonry units together, using trowels, jointers, and pointing tools to achieve proper joint thickness and finish.
  7. Install and anchor reinforcing materials, such as steel bars or mesh, within masonry structures to provide additional strength and stability.
  8. Perform waterproofing, sealing, and caulking activities to protect masonry surfaces from moisture intrusion and weather damage.
  9. Repair and replace damaged or deteriorated masonry work, including repointing mortar joints, replacing bricks or stones, and patching cracks or holes.
  10. Follow safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries on construction sites, including proper handling of materials, equipment, and scaffolding.

Requirements:

  1. Previous experience as a mason or in a related construction trade, with a strong understanding of masonry techniques, materials, and tools.
  2. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and specifications to execute masonry projects accurately and according to design requirements.
  3. Knowledge of masonry materials, including bricks, blocks, stones, mortar, and grout, and their properties, uses, and applications.
  4. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials, bending, kneeling, and working at heights, while maintaining safety and precision.
  5. Skill in using hand tools and power tools common to the masonry trade, such as trowels, levels, saws, drills, and grinders, safely and effectively.
  6. Attention to detail and accuracy in laying masonry units, achieving proper alignment, spacing, and finishing for a professional appearance.
  7. Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with other construction trades, contractors, and project managers.
  8. Flexibility to work varying schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime, to accommodate project deadlines and client needs.
  9. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety regulations and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and fall protection.
  10. High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training or certification in masonry or a related field is a plus.
